Treating and Preventing Viruses in Your Well Water Supply

With all of the focus that has been placed on viruses throughout the world in the past couple of years, it is only natural to worry about the possibility of viruses affecting your well water drinking supply. While there is no evidence that you need to be concerned about COVID-19 and your drinking water, there are certain viruses that can certainly have a negative impact on your water and that should be addressed. Here is a look at just a few.

Responsible for about a half a million of the world’s deaths of children aged 5 and under each year, rotavirus results in vomiting, watery diarrhea and a fever that may reach higher than 101 degrees Fahrenheit. If electrolytes are not properly replaced, the illness can be life-threatening.

Spread through both food and water, norovirus can also be passed from person to person. Also known as Norwalk virus, the highly contagious virus creates symptoms such as water diarrhea, projective vomiting, low fever, cramps, chills, muscle aches and headaches. It only takes a few of the virus to make someone sick and it is possible for someone to carry the virus without showing symptoms. Like COVID-19, the virus can be passed to other people even by someone without symptoms. Unlike COVID-19, even disinfectant gels are not affective against killing the virus.

Hepatitis A

Mostly problematic in countries with poor sanitation, Hepatitis A results in symptoms such as fever, vomiting, reduced appetite, diarrhea, muscle aches and jaundice. Rarely, it may also cause enough liver damage to lead to death.

To remove these viruses from your water supply, you will need to install a water purification system. Of course, prevention of exposure is also key. Therefore, care should be taken to drill the well in areas that are not likely to be contaminated by these viruses. To learn more, contact Pump Service Idaho today!
